DHAKA

Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and the 9th biggest city in the world with over 21 million inhabitants. As the economic center of the country, Dhaka attracts most of the rural migrants who wish to find a job in the capital. Rural-urban migration is one of the major factors contributing to rapid and unplanned growths of Dhaka city.

When they arrive, the poorest of them have no choice but to install themselves in slums. The city alone thus contains about 4 million people who live in almost 5,000 slums, which are not covered by the city water network. Only about 38% of the population of Dhaka is covered by a sewerage system for wastewater.
